Hey, I’m Neil, Explorer Scout Leader at SMESU. I hope you enjoy checking out the web page and meeting the people that make up SMESU. We’re a pretty unique but interesting Unit, and I am proud to be involved with such a great team of people. At SMESU we truly believe in ‘Creating Fine People’ and our open-minded and forward thinking approach allow us to provide a fun and varied programme, where personal development is at the heart of all we do.

SMESU was launched in 2002 by Russell Torrance and me after National re-organisation, and has continued to grow in size and stature. We now have a wide-ranging programme of activities and designer camps, as well as a significant International focus, with the organisation of International activity camps, Explorer Belts and International Expeditions.

My involvement in scouts took me through the different sections. It didn’t take long for me to become involved as a leader and at the age of 18 I became an Assistant Scout Leader at 114th Morningside. Russell and me then formed the 114th Venture Scout Unit, where some of the founding members of SMESU were involved.

Life can be hectic, and working as a Primary School Teacher keeps me on my toes, but I do find time to relax. As a scout I love all the usual outdoor activities and camps, but away from scouts you can find me playing, coaching or watching football. I also enjoy going out with friends, travelling and generally taking life easy.

Don’t be afraid to take the plunge and see what Scouting or SMESU can offer you.
