Kandersteg 2010

The bags are barely unpacked from Uganda, however it is time to get ready for the next SMESU international adventure. We will be traveling to the home of exploration and adventure, the Swiss Alps. Our ten-day expedition will see our members take part in the best adventurous activities; such an amazing location has to offer.

Location
We will be staying at the Kandersteg International Scout Centre; this will be our base for the expedition. We will travel to and from Switzerland on an overnight coach. Our accommodation will be in tents, and we will be cooking some of our own meals.

Activities
We will undertake an overnight expedition to the Frundenhutte, a genuine alpine mountain hut 2562m above sea level, at the base of the Frunden glacier. Here you will learn how to use ice axes and crampons and move roped up across the glacier. After spending the night in the hut, you will then use those skills to journey further onto the glacier to experience either the thrill of ice climbing or learn the skills of ice axe arrests and crevasse rescue. We are also going mountain biking (in real mountains), exploring the trails that run over much of the alpine areas and swinging from the trees on an aerial adventure course In addition we will be spending time exploring our surroundings, including the beautiful Lake Thun, set against the backdrop of the north face of the Eiger. We will also swim in the Alpine lakes and speed downhill on the summer toboggan runs, we are also trying to arrange a tour of one of Switzerland’s famous chocolate factories. Camping at the international home of Scouting, we will meet Scouts from all over that world and take part in the campfires, BBQ’s and discos that the centre provides.
