In June 2013 SMESU was deeply honoured to recieve the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the first to be presented to a voluntary group in Edinburgh.

It is presented for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others in the community, improving the quality of life and opportunity for others and providing an outstanding service.

The award has the same recognition as a MBE and will belong to the unit for as long as it continues to serve the young people in the community.

On Thursday 28th November 2013 The Lord Provost of Edinburgh held a reception for the unit at the City Chambers. Neil, Barry, Catherine and Gareth accepted the award surrounded by the current explorer scouts and former volunteers. We then went onto invest 20 new  SMESU members.
